The prize that deepwater development promises to unlock is great, but the resources required in terms of investment, technology, and people pose huge challenges―particularly in this low oil-price environment.

At the Deepwater Operations Conference, hosted Nov. 3 – 5 in Galveston, Texas, Rob Fast will discuss how offshore players can leverage the current down-cycle through innovation, collaboration, standardization, and lean thinking to emerge stronger as an industry. Fast is Hess’ Vice President of Offshore Americas and West Africa. He will present his keynote address on Nov. 4 at 8 a.m.

As world oil demand grows, more deepwater production will be required; the industry needs to reduce costs and cycle times, while keeping safety the priority. It is imperative that operators and suppliers innovate, collaborate and standardize, applying new behaviors to develop performance capability that reduces inefficiency and creates value. Hess has implemented lean management practices both offshore as well as onshore to improve performance in the areas of safety, quality, delivery and cost. Companies that leverage the down cycle to their advantage will be well positioned in any price environment.

Fast has 29 years of oil and gas industry technical and executive management experience. He joined Hess in 2009 and currently oversees the company’s assets and deep water projects in the Gulf of Mexico, Equatorial Guinea, and Ghana. Prior to assuming his current position in March 2014, Fast served as Vice President of New Ventures leading efforts to identify, capture, and appraise global unconventional resources. Fast joined Hess in 2009 in New York as Vice President of E&P Planning, Strategy & Value Processes, leading strategy development, portfolio optimization, business planning, and value assurance for the global E&P business. Before joining Hess, Fast spent 23 years working in various technical, engineering, project, and executive management roles with ExxonMobil.
